Core + Flow: Pilates and wellness studio design in Liverpool
Zero Gravity Design developed Core + Flow as a commissioned concept for a 3,500 sq ft Pilates and wellness studio in Liverpool. Bringing together a mat-based movement studio, welcoming reception and dedicated treatment spaces, the design explores how boutique fitness can combine a distinctive brand experience with the practical demands of running a studio.
The concept centres on the transition from arrival to movement and recovery. A curved reception desk establishes the Core + Flow identity, framed by illuminated arches, planting and warm upholstered seating. This arrival space gives members somewhere to pause before a class or stay for a conversation afterwards, introducing the sociable atmosphere of a boutique hospitality venue.
Within the Pilates studio, brick arches and tall mirrors establish a strong architectural rhythm. Earthy tones, textured surfaces and soft perimeter lighting create an intimate setting for focused movement. Circular pendant lights provide a contrasting contemporary detail, while the repeated arches connect the studio visually with reception and the wider wellness spaces.
Space planning considers the balance between usable class space, individual movement zones and instructor circulation. The mat-based arrangement allows the room to accommodate different teaching formats without the footprint of fixed exercise machines. Mirrors are integrated into the arches, supporting visibility across the studio while becoming part of its architectural identity.
The wellness offer extends into curtained treatment bays, with the concept visuals exploring red-light sessions alongside the movement programme. These more private settings introduce a quieter pace and give the operator scope to develop bookable services beyond group classes. Brickwork, warm textiles and carefully positioned lighting maintain a consistent character throughout.
ZGD’s scope brings together interior design, space planning, technical design and furniture, fixtures and equipment specification. Bespoke reception detailing, lighting integration and coordinated furniture selections connect the visual concept with the requirements of a future fit-out.
The design outcome
• A distinctive Pilates and wellness studio identity for Core + Flow in Liverpool.
• A flexible movement space planned around mat-based classes and instructor circulation.
• A welcoming reception and seating area that supports the experience before and after class.
• Private treatment settings that broaden the proposed wellness offer.
• A coordinated design direction to inform fit-out planning, specification and future delivery.
Core + Flow demonstrates our approach to leisure and wellness interior design: creating a place people can feel connected to, with a layout that supports the business behind it. The commissioned concept gives the operator a clear picture of how its brand, class programme and wider wellness offer could come together within 3,500 sq ft.
