Zero Gravity Design was commissioned to develop the interior concept for SOMA, a 36,000 sq ft luxury gym and wellness club in East London. The brief was to create a distinctive destination combining strength training, indoor cycling, mat Pilates and spa facilities. Our design connects the intensity of exercise with the comfort and attention to detail of a premium members’ club.

The gym floor establishes the identity. Warm ribbed timber wraps the walls and columns, set against exposed concrete, dark equipment and a terracotta training track. Suspended vertical lights create a rhythm through the space, while tall windows bring daylight into the training environment. Our space planning positions strength equipment alongside the central conditioning zone, giving different activities a clear place within the wider floor.

The studios introduce distinct experiences within the same club. In the indoor cycling room, a curved digital backdrop and theatrical lighting focus attention on the instructor and the shared energy of a class. The Pilates and movement studio takes a quieter approach: sculpted timber ribs turn from wall to ceiling, diffused light softens the room, and mirrors and integrated barres frame an open, mat-based layout.

The spa gives recovery equal prominence. Blue mosaic tiles and the SOMA wordmark anchor the pool, while a rippled reflective ceiling carries the movement of water overhead. A separate spa pool, glazed sauna and steam-room spaces, and poolside loungers create a sequence of settings for bathing and rest. Dark stone finishes and carefully framed lighting give this part of the club a more enclosed, intimate atmosphere.

Changing facilities continue the attention to the member experience. Charcoal lockers sit alongside fluted timber vanity units, dark fittings and illuminated capsule-shaped mirrors. Warm perimeter lighting and planting soften the functional layout, bringing the same level of detail into the spaces used before and after training. Our interior design and FF&E direction connect the individual rooms through coordinated materials, equipment placement and furniture choices.
